BIOGRAPHY
Stephen came to Richmond as a forward-pocket ruckman and later played at full-forward. A strong mark he never shirked an issue and always made the ball his object. He was adaptable and could play at both ends of the ground but played his best football in the ruck. He was runner-up in the Reserves Best and Fairest in 1974 and 1975 and was a member of their 1973 Premiership side. HE played for Richmond in the 1974 Australian Championships against a combined Tasmanian Premiers team. Richmond kicked 34 goals for the game and Stephen finished up kicking 9. In Round 8 of 1975 he played at full-forward against North's David Dench. In an unusual outcome both players finished the game with 2 goals, Dench twice ran down field to kick goals. In 1976 he put together several consistent performances which showed a promise of things to come, however he was cleared to Essendon in 1977 and spent five seasons there before transferring to Sydney. His best year in senior football was 1984 when he ran fourth in the "Brownlow Medal" while playing with the Swans. A school teacher, he assisted the ACT Rams VSFL Under/18 team by coaching their Sydney based players, and was Swans ruck coach in 2017.
