BIOGRAPHY
Charles was a selector’s delight as he could play in almost any position, but he mainly played in defence. He was recruited from Northern Victoria to Richmond, in 1938. In his first year at Richmond he was selected in the VFL Reserves’ Representative side. Endowed with great courage, he was always found at the bottom of packs chasing the ball. He was a member of the 1944 Senior Grand Final side and the 1946 Reserves’ Premiership team. He also won the Reserves’ Best and Fairest award in 1944. As a clubman he had few equals serving the Richmond Football club loyally for 54 years. After retiring as a player he served on the Executive Committee and Board of Directors for 36 years and was awarded Life Membership in 1947. He also served on the Selection Committee for 14 years, seven as Chairman, as well as the Social and Fund Raising Committees. In his younger days he was a fine country cricketer who once played for a Combined Country XI against a touring English team. Charles dies in September 1992.
