BIOGRAPHY
Charles was a champion rover during Richmond’s VFA days. After three seasons with Richmond he moved to South Melbourne, where he played for seven seasons. He coached South in 1909 and 1912, leading them to their first VFL Premiership in 1909 and runners-up in 1912. He was voted South Melbuorne’s second best player in the 1907 and 1909 semi-finals against Collingwood and the 1907 Grand Final against Carlton. He was a brilliant all-round player who had excellent disposal skills, poise and balance. In 1913, he was elected as South Melbourne’s captain; however, the committee wouldn’t back his selection so he rejoined Richmond and went on to win the Best and Fairest award. He then coached Richmond between 1914 and 1916. Charles also coached St.Kilda in 1921.
