BIOGRAPHY
Daniel Rioli was born in Fremantle Western Australia and grew up in Pirlangimpi on Melville Island in the Tiwi Islands . He first attended high school at St Johns Catholic College Darwin and played competitive football with St Marys Football club in Darwin.
He moved away from home to Victoria at age 14, where he boarded at St Patricks College in Ballarat and played in the schools winning team in the 2015 state schools championships. In 2015 he also played TAC Cup football with North Ballarat Rebels. Daniel played representative football for the Northern Territory in the U/18 2015 National Championships . He also played for the U/18 Allies team in a match against the AFL Academy held prior to the 2015 Grand Final in which he kicked 4 goals.

Daniel was drafted by Richmond with pick 15 overall in the 2015 AFL National Draft and he made his debut with the senior team in Round 1, 2016 against Carlton continuing on to play 18 senior games in 2016 and was awarded the clubs Best First year player award. After the disappointment of the 2016 season finish the Tigers started 2017 strongly and Daniel along with other small forwards Jason Castagna and Dan Butler , with their pressure and tackling , had a big impact on the Tigers five game unbeaten start to the season.

Daniel became a regular senior player and was part of the Tigers AFL 2017 Premiership team. Daniel also won the AFL Goal of the year award for his Round 3 snap against West Coast. In 2017 Daniel ranked first at Richmond and eight in the competition for tackles ‘inside 50 ‘. Daniel was also selected in the AFLPA 22under22 team of the best players under 22 in the competition.
The 2017 Premiership was a fantastic thrill for Daniel but came with a cost, he suffered a broken foot which needed three months
rehabilitation. Daniel was hampered at the start of the 2018 season by the recovery from the 2017 Grand Final injury , which prevented him from playing senior football until Round 13 against Geelong. Daniel played in the senior team for the rest of the season and set new ‘ career best averages ‘ in all major statistical categories including goals, disposals, marks, and tackles. Daniel also played in the disappointing 2018 Preliminary Final loss to Collingwood.

Daniel expanded his playing role to include some midfield time at the start of 2019. Having missed the Dreamtime game in 2018 Daniel was committed to play in the ‘ Dreamtime at the G game ‘ against Essendon in Round10 . Daniel was wearing a guernsey he had designed with his mother Belinda and father Bradley and featured images central to his family and the Tiwi Islands that were his childhood home including the family totem of the turtle.

Daniel missed Rounds 8 and 9 , played in the Round 10 Dreamtime game , missed Rounds 11 and 14 and played the rest of the season in the senior team including the AFL 2019 Premiership , making him a two time Premiership player with the Tigers.
The Covid interrupted 2020 season provided many challenges to the AFL and the Clubs. The season commenced for Richmond with Round 1 being played on 19/03/2020 against Carlton without any crowds due to Government health orders .
At the end of Round 1 the season was suspended for what turned out to be 11 weeks , with the AFL announcing that the 2020 season would be reduced to 17 home and away games plus finals , game duration would be reduced from 20min quarters to 16min plus time on, and players would be subject to covid isolation protocols that would be stricter than the general community.
The competition resumed for Richmond on 11/06/2020 . Matches continued for Richmond in Victoria against Collingwood (R2) ,
Hawthorn (R3), ST Kilda (R4) , Melbourne (R5 ) with no crowds allowed due to Government health orders.

Due to Covid outbreaks in Victoria introducing travel restrictions all Victorian clubs were relocated out of Victoria with Richmond going to the Gold Coast to stay in an AFL Hub . Richmond did not return to Victoria till their season finished as was the case with all other Victorian clubs. The AFL did a magnificent job of keeping the season going in the face of the general Covid risks and the closure of State borders with various quarantining requirements. . Richmond played Round 6 against Sydney at The Gabba in front of a crowd of 3606. Richmond played GWS at Sydney Showgrounds (R8) in front of a crowd of 5500 , Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval (R11) in front of a crowd of 10256 , Adelaide at Adelaide Oval (R17) in front of a crowd of 17710. Richmond played 5 games at Carrara , a Second one at The Gabba and the Dream Time game against Essendon at Marrara Oval NT.

Amidst all this uncertainty Daniel again found difficulty securing a permanent place in the senior team but was selected in Round 13 Dreamtime in Darwin match against Essendon and he was one of the Tigers best players in his first match in his Northern Territory home. Daniel kept his place in the senior team for the rest of the season and played in his third Premiership when the Tigers defeated Geelong in the AFL 2020 Grand Final played at the Gabba before a crowd of 29707. The MCG was not available because of the suspension of playing of sport in Victoria due to the Covid pandemic. Daniel became the youngest 3 times Premiership player in Richmond history. Daniel had difficulty again in securing a permanent position in the senior team in 2021 , but after a change of role playing half-back in the VFL team he returned to the seniors and performed very well at half-back for the rest of the season. Daniel is another multiple Premiership player who has an important role to assist the Tigers to reach the level of competitiveness to return to the Finals in 2022.
