Howard was a good all-round sportsman who had success at both football and cricket. As a footballer he was half-forward-flanker and spent three seasons with Richmond before crossing to VFA Club Prahran for two seasons. He also played one game with Melbourne in 1919. As a cricketer, he represented the Richmond District side between 1914 and 1925, playing 125 games, and scoring 2821 runs. A left-hand batsman he scored four centuries, won three club Batting and Bowling awards, and was a member of the Second XI Premiership team in 1914-15. He was a Life Member of the Richmond Cricket Club. In 1924 he played one game for Victoria, against Tasmania, scoring 32 and taking 5 wickets. Howard then crossed to Essendon Cricket Club where he played between 1925 and 1935 scoring 1934 runs with three centuries and 10 fifties. He also took 70 wickets.
