BIOGRAPHY
“Joe” was a left-footer centre-half-back and centre-half-forward who was recruited from local church team St.Ignatius. His only senior game was in Round 17 of 1925 against Melbourne. He had a short stint with Carlton Seconds before joining Coburg where he was a member of their 1928 Premiership team. He was also a very good District Cricketer who played a total of 206 Senior XI District matches with Fitzroy and Colts. A spin bowler and middle-order batsman he played with Colts in season 1929/30 scoring 83 runs and taking 7 wickets. He then played with Fitzroy between 1927 and 1948 scoring 2449 runs and taking 229 wickets. He scored two hundreds and 11 fifties with his highest scores being 114 not out. He was a member of Fitzroy’s 1930/31, 1937/38, 1938/39 and 1939/40 Premiership sides and captained Fitzroy between 1938 and 1940.
He also played 20 games for Victoria between 1932 and 1935. He scored 591 runs with four fifties and a highest score of 76 and he took 43 wickets with his best performance being 6 for 43 on debut. He later coached at the Fitzroy, Footscray, North Melbourne and South Melbourne Cricket Clubs. He was also a fine baseballer and represented Victoria in interstate competition. Away from sport, he worked as an accountant with the Victorian Railways.
His son Maurie Plant was a noted sports coach and athletics commentator.
