Stephen played his early football at full-forward where he displayed some fine goalkicking skills. He originally worked his way up from the U/19 team , to the seniors. In 1984, he won the VFL U/19 Competition Goalkicking award with 101 goals and he also ran second in the “ Morrish Medal “ count for Best & Fairest in the competition. In his debut season with the seniors he finished the year with 49 goals. His highest individual goal tally with the seniors was six which he kicked against Melbourne and Footscray in 1985. He scored 5 goals or more four times . In the U/19 ‘s he once kicked 11 goals against Colling wood in 1984. Stephen had the nickname “ Bomber “ and in his early seasons he displayed great excitement after scoring a goal.
He later transferred to defence where the main features of his game were his ability to run the ball out of defence and his long , clearing left foot kicks. During 1991 he transferred to Port Melbourne , and between 1992 and 1994 he played with Box Hill. In 1996, he is playing with Bulleen-Templestowe.
