BIOGRAPHY
Stephen played most of his senior football with Richmond, on the wing. He was recruited from Birchip to Richmond’s Under/19s in 1987. He spent three seasons with the Under/19s and was a member of their 1989 Premiership side as well as running second in the Best and Fairest by half a vote. He made his senior debut in 1990 and showed enough form to indicate that he was a genuine prospect. He displayed natural talent and maturity winning the Goalkicking award and Best First Year Player award. He also finished third in the Best and Fairest award. He was a good mark, long accurate kick and possessed good pace for a player of his height. His career then suffered several setbacks due to injury and this eventually led to a loss of form. In 1994, he crossed to Collingwood where he was in and out of their senior side. In 1995, he joined his brother, former Richmond player, Des Ryan, at Frankston. Whilst at Melbourne High School, Stephen achieved School Colours in both 1987 and 1988.
